How Many Days Do You Need at Capitol Reef National Park?

Most visitors need 2-3 days to see Capitol Reef National Park's main sights, the Scenic Drive, Fruita, and Hickman Bridge. Adding a third day gives time for a longer hike or a trip into the park's backcountry districts.

One Day: The Highlights

If you only have a day, you can still cover the park's best-known corridor:

• Stop at the visitor center for trail conditions and a park map

• Drive the Scenic Drive (a 7.9-mile paved road, 24 miles round trip with the Capitol Gorge spur), which requires the park's entrance fee

• Walk the short, family-friendly Hickman Bridge trail

• Wander the orchards in Fruita and stop at the Gifford Homestead for a slice of pie

This covers the park's main corridor without needing a high-clearance vehicle or a long hiking day.

Two Days: A Fuller Visit

With a second day, you have room for a longer hike and more of the park without rushing:

• Add a longer trail: Cassidy Arch, Chimney Rock, or Cohab Canyon are all popular half-day hikes

• Explore Capitol Gorge on foot, one of the two dirt spur roads off the Scenic Drive

• Spend an evening stargazing, Capitol Reef is a certified Dark Sky Park

Two days is enough time to see the park without feeling like you're checking boxes.

Three-Plus Days: Backcountry and Slot Canyons

Capitol Reef is much bigger than the Fruita corridor most visitors see. With three or more days, you can get into:

• The Cathedral Valley District to the north or the Waterpocket District to the south, both requiring a high-clearance vehicle and a real time commitment

• Slot canyons like Burro Wash, Cottonwood Wash, Sheets Gulch, or Lower Muley Twist Canyon, best done with a local guide or tour operator for a canyoneering trip

• Multi-day backpacking routes, including Chimney Rock Canyon to Pleasant Creek

This is the right pace for repeat visitors or serious hikers who've already done the main corridor.

Where to Base Your Stay

Torrey is the gateway town to Capitol Reef, and it's where most visitors base their trip. Red Sands Hotel & Spa is about 4 miles from the park entrance, with an indoor pool, a full-service spa (the only one within 300 miles), and Rock Garden Eatery and Bar all on site, so you're not driving elsewhere after a long day on the trail.
